The Problem with Harris-Benedict

The original Harris-Benedict equation was built in 1919 from a very specific demographic: young, lean, highly active people. Modern bodies are different — on average we carry less lean muscle, more body fat, and live far more sedentary lives. Applying a 1919 formula to a modern office worker produces a predictable error: studies show it consistently overestimates BMR by 5% to 10%. Why Mifflin-St Jeor Is More Accurate

Introduced in 1990, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation was developed on a much larger and more representative sample reflecting contemporary body compositions. The Mifflin-St Jeor formula:

⚠️ The gym-goer’s trap: if you work at a desk for 8 hours and lift weights for 45 minutes, you are still biologically sedentary for 23 hours of the day. Many regular gym-goers should honestly select Sedentary or Lightly Active — choosing “Moderately Active” out of optimism is one of the most common reasons a “deficit” produces zero weight loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my TDEE change as I lose weight?

Yes, absolutely. A smaller body requires less energy to exist and move. If you lose 15 pounds, your BMR — and therefore your TDEE — decreases. Recalculate your TDEE every time you lose 5 to 10 pounds; otherwise your weight loss will stall, because your old “deficit” has quietly become your new maintenance level.

Should I eat back the calories my Apple Watch or Fitbit says I burned?

No. Fitness trackers are notoriously inaccurate, often overestimating exercise calories by 30–50%. More importantly, if you selected your activity multiplier correctly, your exercise is already counted inside your TDEE. Eating those calories back double-counts them and erases your deficit.

Is TDEE the same as BMR?
